I-RAMP³

I-RAMP³'s vision

I-RAMP³'s vision is to enable a shift from traditional manufacturing systems to intelligent manufacturing systems in the European manufacturing industry. The project aims to create innovative solutions to improve competitiveness in the industrial sector. This can be achieved through rapid, optimised commissioning and operation of the production line. This will significantly reduce commissioning and reconfiguration times and other costs.
At the same time, manufacturing efficiency is improved while costs are reduced.

Specific project objectives

I-RAMP³ aims to approach the integration of additional functionality in existing and new manufacturing networks with zero commissioning time.
To achieve these goals, the project has four specific objectives.

  • plug-and-produce devices, sensors and other devices with built-in intelligence for quick replacement
  • unified communication and collaboration mechanisms between heterogeneous production tools
  • internal and cross-optimisation models for automatic configuration of devices
  • improved production and execution systems for workflow optimisation and data evaluation

Additional specific objective

I-RAMP³ proposes the transformation of traditional manufacturing tools into network-enabled devices (NETDEVs), which are the building blocks of a heterogeneous manufacturing network.

What are network-enabled devices ("NETDEVs")?

NETDEVs are units that enclose a device, a complex sensor unit, a sensor network or a group of these components into a single logical unit. NETDEVs can be equipped with built-in intelligence, which includes an extensible set of internal models, such as fast commissioning, optimised process execution, maintenance or quality evaluations. These internal functionalities can be added to NETDEVs by the component suppliers, with the following benefits:

  • Customise the device for your client and application
  • Dynamic extension of tools according to individual needs
  • Standardized uniform interfaces for devices, sensors and sensor networks
  • Consolidation and exploitation of supplier's technical expertise
  • Optimised quality control during production

Expected impact

I-RAMP³ will contribute to the transformation of the European manufacturing industry, in particular SMEs, into knowledge-based businesses. Added value will be created by integrating technical know-how into machines and tools, thus giving the industry a competitive advantage. The new technology is a major step towards the flexibility and sustainability of European manufacturing. In particular, the following impacts are expected:

  • Reducing drastic commissioning times and other costs for new or reconfigured production systems
  • Increased manufacturing efficiency in setting up the optimal manufacturing system - Increased overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) of the whole manufacturing system
  • Quality aggregation and evaluation of different levels of manufacturing processes - Enhanced NETDEV services for component suppliers and integrators
  • More flexible, project-based collaboration between different component suppliers
